2013 August Meeting Notes

2013 August Meeting Notes

UCDW planned out events for the rest of 2013. It was decided that the UCDW September meeting be postponed until after the primary so we could instead host a Dessert Party to meet the candidates. Dates were set for a November event on Food Stamps, Hunger and Women, and for the Annual UCDW Holidaze Party on December 9, 2013.

2013 March Meeting – Going to a Rally

UCDW’s March Meeting is a Rally!

To commemorate International Women’s Day UCDW joins the rally to DEFEND WOMEN’S RIGHTS.

Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 PM (This will serve as our UCDW March Meeting)
SUNY Campus, Lecture Center Hall 100
New Paltz, NY

Women’s rights are STILL under attack. What can we do? Stand up, fight back! Volunteer to staff the UCDW table or just come to hear the speakers. Email us at

Dozens of community, labor, feminist, peace, justice, political and college organizations are backing this Mid-Hudson regional commemoration of International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 7. Rallies are taking place in many U.S. towns, called nationally by Women Organized to Resist and Defend.

To continued conservative attacks on women’s rights, we respond:
Stop Violence Against Women, Stop the War on Women’s Rights, Defend Reproductive Justice, Full Equality for all Women Workers!

Speakers, singers, poets and videos will express these demands at the rally. There will be plenty of information and ideas to take home and use.

The Hudson Valley Activist Newsletter is the organizer. Endorsers include:
Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation AFL-CIO, United University Professions AFL-CIO (SUNY NP), New Paltz Women in Black, Amnesty International (local branch), Bard College Student Labor Dialogue, Washbourne House (women and children’s shelter), Orange County Democratic Women, Ulster County Democratic Women (UCDW), Sociology Dept. (SUNY NP), Progressive Academic Network (SUNY NP), Environmental Task Force (community/campus), NP Climate Action Coalition, NYPIRG and OXFAM (SUNY NP chapters), Students for a Free Palestine (SUNY NP), Move to Amend of Ulster County, Peace and Social Progress Now, Mid-Hudson ANSWER, Haitian People’s Support Project.

2013 February Meeting Notes

2013 February Meeting Notes

On February 11, 2013, UCDW endorsed the LGBT Equality Pledge and officially partnered with the Hudson Valley Progressives.

Pledge for Full LGBT Equality

With this Pledge, we call upon our friends, our neighbors, and our elected officials to lead the way toward full equality for LGBT Americans.

Each week, each month, and each year that we wait means kids being bullied in their schools, workers being fired for who they are, couples being separated by unfair immigration laws, and families being labeled as “less than” their neighbors.

To change this we must bring the entire issue of our inequality and the psychological harm we endure to an inescapable awareness. Simply put, we need to call the question and this Pledge is designed to do exactly that.

History will judge not simply whether we make all Americans equal under the law, but also the expediency of doing so. We must live up to that challenge, and do so without delay.

Please SIGN THE PLEDGE and then put the Pledge to work in your community, political party, or organization. The time for equality has come, and with a collective voice and focused effort, we can usher in its arrival together.

Our beautiful Gift Baskets will be available by silent auction. We’ll also be collecting non-perishable foods for Queen’s Galley Kitchen. We will collect items for Samaritan Village of Ellenville women veterans—their holiday wish list includes Assorted Board games (monopoly, scrabble, etc), Individual book reading lights, Shop Rite Gift Certificates, Womens slippers, Womens Robes, and Artwork for their room. See flyer to learn more about program.

Reasons to celebrate as the 2012 Election proved women make a difference:

  • Women made up 54% of the electorate in the November election.
  • Women gained 3 seats in the senate bringing us to a record 20 seats starting in 2013.
  • Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Hawaii elected their first female senators: Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Baldwin, and Mazie Hirono.
  • Senator-elect Baldwin is the first openly gay US Senator.
  • New Hampshire elected an all female Congressional delegation and Governor.
  • Tulsi Gabbard and Tammy Duckworth became the first women with combat experience to be elected to Congress. Duckworth, who lost both her legs in Iraq, faced super PAC money and outrageous slander from her right-wing opponent.

The Holidaze Victory Party is Monday, December 10, 2012 from 5:30 PM to 8 PM, at Dem Headquarters, 32 John St. Kingston.

Suggested $10 donation includes refreshments and appetizers. It’s a great time to renew your UCDW membership for 2013. RSVP Gail: (845) 658-8055 or email
