Utah Defines Miscarriage as “Criminal Homicide”
Utah is posed to become the first state in the U.S. to criminalize miscarriage and punish women for having or seeking an illegal abortion. Utah's "Criminal Miscarriage" law:
* expands the definition of illegal abortion to include miscarriages
* removes immunity protections for women who have or seek illegal abortions
* assumes women are "guilty of criminal homicide of an unborn child" if a pregnancy ends after "intentional, knowing, or reckless" behavior.
But even among states that punish illegal abortions, this "Criminal Miscarriage" law is unique. It doesn't punish individuals who perform illegal procedures; it punishes women.
Activists in Salt Lake City urge others to
"Tell everyone you know about this law."
"Thanks to last night's vote,
that child of yours who has had asthma since birth
will now be covered after suffering for her first nine years
as an American child with a pre-existing condition.
Thanks to last night's vote, that 23-year-old of yours
who will be hit one day by a drunk driver and spend six months
recovering in the hospital will now not go bankrupt
because you will be able to keep him on your insurance policy.
Thanks to last night's vote, after your cancer returns for the third time
-- racking up another $200,000 in costs to keep you alive --
your insurance company will have to commit a criminal act
if they even think of dropping you from their rolls."

Statement from NY State Senator Liz Krueger
on the Expulsion of Hiram Monseratte
“Voting to expel a member of the New York State Senate is not a decision to be taken lightly, but in the case of Hiram Monserrate it was necessary to protect the integrity of the body. It is unfortunate that Mr. Monserrate was unwilling to respect his constituents or the institution of the Senate by resigning upon his conviction. After an exhaustive bipartisan committee review of all his actions, the Senate had no choice but to act. Violence against women is unacceptable and because of his actions, Hiram Monserrate had demonstrated he was not qualified to serve as a member of the Senate. The already announced Special Election next month will ensure the people of this district do not lack for representation.”
Sarah Palin, in her big speech at the right-wing "tea party convention," had the gall to blame President Obama and Democrats in Congress for the mess that her party created in the first place. Let the facts speak:
